I use software, such as Studio 3ds Max, ZBrush, Photoshop and a range of plug-ins, to create computer graphics which I currently display in electronic form at Aire, Second Life, and the Internet. I also have plans to display my work in real life again, whereby I would either print the electronic image on to canvas or photographic paper (Lightjet 5000, gelatin silver, platinum print). As is the case with photography, the market for computer graphics is likely to place a premium on prints made one by one, using quality materials, rather than works that are mass produced. I have absorbed many influences over the years, however there is no attempt to model my work on a particular artistic style. The basis of my work are my dreams, which I reconfigure to suit the context of any particular series I am currently at work on. There is always an informal narrative structure to each series I construct that as I say especially draws on dream imagery to convey my impressions of an introspective life juxtaposed with contemporary Western society. It is my desire to create works of singular force and appeal. Hence, the attentive harvesting and creative processing of my dreams. The unconscious is a master of engendering unusual yet intriguing imagery and narratives, despite the underlying tension often experienced while asleep. With experience it is possible to direct the unconscious mind to build upon a design idea in order to enhance or resolve an issue. And this is what I commonly will do. However, this does not mean I undervalue the imagination, which transforms the raw materials of the unconscious into a finished artwork. |
